Before the assembly and extensive use of vehicles, Railroad companies were the prime movers of having their brand name and logo spray painted on rail coaches. Covering vehicles with a material on which graphics and lettering were printed was attempted with the creation of plastic. This did not succeed as plastic was prone to warping. It took the development of vinyl to change the picture.

Vinyl printed letter and graphic lamination started to be produced when a company was tasked to develop layered film to be used for vehicle covering as substitute or alternative for paint. A beverage company was the first to employ this novel idea by covering a bus with promotional graphics and texts. Other companies from various sectors soon followed suit including individual entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises.

Recent developments in plastic gave way to the production of new types designed primarily for use in wrap advertising. New features such as bubble preventing channels were introduced. Special adhesion techniques were formulated which allowed repeated wrapping without degrading the coverings. The material is molded onto the surface using heater torches or heat guns.

Decals became popular when the certain individual had their vehicles custom wrapped to make it more attractive and eye catching. The next step is the design stage where graphics are laid out. Then follows the production phase in which the graphic art is printed and laminated to protect the vinyl from scratches and ultraviolet rays. The final stage is the actual installation when the material is wrapped to the vehicle.

There are two fundamental types of wrap on for vehicles, that is the part one and the full one. As the words imply, it actually describes the type. The difference is not intentional but is there because of financial expediency.
